History

AutoCAD began as a small hobby project by a group of employees at the now defunct company Intergraph in 1976. The name AutoCAD was chosen because it was easy to say, spelled like the name of an auto mechanic, and the letters a and c formed the first letter in its name.

On January 10, 1977, the prototype version of AutoCAD became available as a beta release, and on February 11, 1978 the first commercial version of AutoCAD was released. The company’s initial strategy was to target the construction industry. The app was called AutoCAD Drafting System. It was designed for the new generation of microcomputers, including the Apple II, IBM PC and Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 1. Unlike other CAD systems at the time, AutoCAD was designed to be a true graphics application. That is, instead of providing all the tools necessary to draw and place geometry and model the results, users were directed toward CAD applications that already provided these features.

The first version of AutoCAD was not an exact replica of the drafting work that Intergraph’s designers had been doing, but instead was a much simpler application that was based on the earlier work that Intergraph had done on its own first-generation CAD system. As early as 1981, the first four official versions of AutoCAD were based on a system they had developed called Intergraph CADgraphics. However, the first release of AutoCAD included all the features available in Intergraph’s earlier CAD application. In addition to the new graphical features, AutoCAD was written entirely in assembly language.

By the end of 1981, however, Intergraph’s first CAD product was slow and inadequate, and Intergraph was acquired by Autodesk in 1982. The new Intergraph Corporation’s effort was to merge its CAD business into the Autodesk product. In addition, the company was spun off as Autodesk, Inc.

With the acquisition, Autodesk completely integrated the Intergraph design team into the Autodesk organization. The team’s work was then merged with the new CAD development team led by Jim Blinn at the newly formed Autodesk, Inc. In April 1982, the original Drafting System product line was renamed AutoCAD.

I suppose it should have been a felony, but it still isn’t too bad.
