Dynamic Range Compression takes the input audio data stream and algorithmically derives an alternate representation of that data stream. The alternate representation comprised of the high and low frequencies which make up the input audio data stream. These two alternatives are then combined dynamically a set percentage above and below the threshold. This process then produces an affected alternate representation of the input audio data stream.

Attack: The amount of time before a Compressor operation is initiated when the input signal level is greater than the threshold level. A set amount of time can be either an absolute or relative unit of time. A relative unit of time may be expressed by a percentage, indicating how many percentage of a total amount of time the effect will be applied to the input level. For example, an attack time setting of 40% will result in the compressor being applied to the input audio stream for 40% of the time that the compressed audio stream is greater than the threshold.

Release: The amount of time after the input signal falls below the threshold for which the compressor remains active. For instance, if the compressor has a threshold of -20dB and set to a release time of 20 milliseconds, the compressor will not remain active after the input signal has fallen below -20dB. The compressor is only active during the 20 milliseconds that the input signal is greater than -20dB.
