AutoCAD 2D, the most basic of the three available CAD programs, was released in 1982, and has been released at regular intervals since then. In 1997, AutoCAD LT became available, offering the functionality of AutoCAD 2D in a relatively-simpler application. Geometric representations
In AutoCAD, objects can be represented in more than one way. These representations may be created by the user, as in the use of DXF importing, or generated by the software.

Geometric representations are based on one of several modes of geometry. These include:

Parametric
Surface
Geometric
Extrusion

Each geometric representation has its own set of properties and special properties. Each representation may also have a choice of viewing. The typical representation for walls is Wireframe.

When a geometric representation is chosen, a default viewpoint, with up to three angles and up to two distances from the view plane, is chosen. These default settings are often not what is wanted.

DXF files are made up of blocks which contain properties such as thickness and other properties. Blocks are to be joined together to form the file.

DXF is a cross-platform format. It may be imported into many software applications. Some of the most popular software to read DXF files are: AutoCAD, Creo, MicroStation, Revit, As-CAD, Inventor, and Catia. While these programs have their own limitations, DXF allows easy integration.

DXF may contain a variety of information. This includes drawings, measurements, schedules, dimensions, notes, comments, colors, graphics, layers, blocks, and shapes.

DXF files have several limitations. They are not scalable and cannot be edited. They are two dimensional and do not support 3D data.
