This study focuses on the analysis of the relationship between onset of pain and the physiological response using a combination of techniques. Initially reported in the literature the most reliable method of classifying mel d based on increased pain has been by the method of Parsons (1946). Parsons used an equation that classified a pain response by the average of a pain measurement given to the antecedent of the pain. Parsons then also reported positive and negative predictive values to predict the pain response. It has since been the most widely used system when only one pain response is to be classified. His idea that predictive values where related to the pain response has been ignored. He also stated that the rate of development of pain was most important and his concept has been used more widely to produce a predictive value. We studied different variables to classifiy or predict mel D pain in the anterior epigastrium, anterior scapular, retro-auricular and cervical dermatomes. Techniques were used to analyse such variables as heart rate, warmth and tenderness and motor response.
